Opening a wall for a remodel
A partial renovation needs a survey of the area being renovated only, so a bathroom or kitchen wall can be tested without surveying the whole house.

Joint compound, wall texture and plaster are all on Metro’s list of materials to test before remodel debris is accepted. We have the walls you plan to open tested, then remove any positive sections inside a sealed work area.
A wall that tests positive is friable work in DEQ’s eyes, so it goes to a licensed abatement contractor once DEQ has had the notice for 10 days. Walls in Beaverton, Lake Oswego and West Linn are part of our work.

DEQ treats wall texture as friable when it contains asbestos. It comes off wet, inside an enclosure, and goes straight into bags.
A small cut for a repair may be exempt when it removes less than 3 square feet or 3 linear feet and the repair, not the asbestos, is the point. Otherwise the cut is asbestos work like any other.
Oregon lets a lab analyze joint compound, tape and wallboard together as one wall system. Other layers, like paint over texture over plaster, are reported one by one.
Once the asbestos is out, your drywall or plaster contractor takes over. Keep the survey report with your project records, since Metro asks for proof before it takes remodel debris from a pre-2004 home.

Testing comes first; see asbestos testing, or start over at the home page.
